Title: Optical Emission from the Red Rectangle Nebula

Co-author: Radmila Topalovic

Co-authors' Institutions: The University of Nottingham, UK

Abstract:

We report GMOS long-slit observations of the Red Rectangle nebula and its central binary star HD 44179 in the near-UV/blue and far-red optical regions in the search for suspected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules and, in combination with near-IR UIR band observations, to determine the evolution of carbon-rich material from a circumstellar environment towards dust in the interstellar medium. The emission spatial distribution is compared with that of ERE and prominent optical bands that appear to be the emission counterparts of some of the diffuse interstellar absorption bands.

Comments:

This is a 'preliminary' abstract which we would wish to modify as the data analysis is completed.
