Title: Confirming the first UKIDSS Y dwarfs using GNIRS

Abstract:

Y dwarfs are the as yet undiscovered population of sub-stellar objects cooler even than the known methane or T dwarfs, and are expected within the Teff=700-400K domain, where atmospheric water clouds and strong ammonia absorption could be evident. Y dwarf discovery is a key science driver for the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS), which will probe ~3 magnitudes deeper than 2MASS across 7000 sq degs of sky. I am leading an ongoing GNIRS program on Gemini South (as part of an international collaboration, the UKIDSS Cool Dwarf Science Working Group) to measure spectra of LAS Y dwarf candides using "quick response" time. In this talk I will provide a summary of the results to date, including one object which is potentially a record breaking low-temperature discovery. The program has just been renewed across 07A-08B, and further exciting discoveries are expected. We have also just been awarded time on UKIRT, the WHT and the INT to do rapid photometric followup of Y dwarf candidates, to feed into the gemini/gnirs program. We are thus confident of additional new exciting results.
