Abstract:

The superb spatial resolution afforded by the Gemini telescopes at mid-IR wavelengths allows the investigation of galaxies at unprecedented resolution. The mid-IR emission of luminous IR galaxies follows a strikingly similar morphology to that of HST Pa-alpha images, closely following powerful HII regions. Subsequent spectroscopy shows deep silicate absorption over the HII regions, but not necessarily the nucleus, as well as extended PAH emission. Implications for understanding the central regions of galaxies as well as the star formation rates are examined.
