Title: On Mass-Metallicity Relations Spanning Over Six Decades in Galaxy Mass

Co-authors: Eric F. Bell, Rachel S. Somerville

Co-authors' Institutions: Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, Germany

Abstract:

We describe mass-metallicity relations for local (D < 2 Mpc) and nearby (SDSS) star-forming galaxies spanning six dex in galaxy mass with ISM oxygen abundances as the measure of metallicity, and for "all" galaxies spanning nine dex in galaxy mass with stellar iron abundances as the metallicity. With the construction of stellar effective yields, very low-mass galaxies have exhibited metals loss, which is consistent with the result from gaseous effective yields. Finally, we illustrate the impact of galaxy environment on the mass-metallicity relation: gas-poor dwarfs in clusters of galaxies appear to lie in a similar locus as local isolated gas-rich dwarfs.
