Abstract:
This project is related with the study of the nature of X-ray sources associated to
the Canis Majoris (CMa R1) star forming region. Most of the ROSAT sources show
properties of low- and intermediate-mass pre-main sequence stars: point-like sources
are T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars, while extended emission could be due to
unresolved young stellar clusters. In order to verify if extend features were
possibly truly diffuse emission, associated with an old supernova remnant, we
obtained XMM observations of CMa R1. The data revealed 61 X-ray sources, spatially
distributed in stellar groups previously unresolved by ROSAT. The correlation of
near-IR counterparts with these X-ray sources indicates that they are probably young
stars. Aiming to confirm the nature of these objects, multi-object spectroscopy was
performed in 4 fields covering most of the clusters. Using GMOS South, spectra were
obtained for 83 stars, most of them identified with X-ray sources. The R600 grating
was used!
to provide the adequate spectral resolution and to cover two spectral ranges
containing the Halpha (656.2nm) and Li (670.8nm), which confirms the young nature
of the objects. |
