Chemical evolution in the Magellanic Clouds

The Magellanic Clouds have long been used as a laboratory to test the validity of stellar and galactic theories and models. I shall review the current state of our knowledge concerning the chemical evolution of these galaxies, as seen from detailed abundance measurements in young stars (cool supergiants). In particular, the stellar abundances and abundance ratios are used to derive constraints on the star formation history of the Clouds. Future developements in this area, expected from the 8m class telescopes soon coming into operation, will also be examined.
