Application for observing time at SOAR during Early Science demonstration.

SOAR

NSO/NTAC home

  • Science programs should have potential for a significant impact on their field.

  • The programs should have a high probability of success, assuming proper performance of the telescope and the instrument(s).

  • The programs should nonetheless provide good tests of the operational capabilities of the telescope, the instrument(s), and the observing modes (classical, remote, ToO).

This web form is intended to be filled by Brazilian astronomers that are asking observing time at SOAR during the early science program. The language of the applications is English, since the observation will be carry out in service mode  by astronomers that may not be familiar with Portuguese. Fields marked with an asterisk (*) must be filled. Otherwise, your application cannot be submitted. Avoid using latex markups and symbols different to ASCII. If your proposal contain figures or tables, please send them to soar@lna.br  after submitting this proposal. In order to avoid confusion, name the files using the following convention:

Figures:
PI's surname+FigX.ext. Where X is the number of the figure and ext the type of extension.

Example:
PI: Joao Silva. Name of figures as silva_Fig1.eps

Tables:
PI's surname+TabX.ext Example: silva_Tab1.txt

Note that the only type of attachments that are accepted are those with .eps, .pdf, .ps, .gif or .jpg extensions.

Before submitting your proposal, read important information that will help you in preparing your application.

By applying for observing time, the applicant agrees to the following terms:

I am aware that the SOAR Early Science Program is a two-way agreement. In exchange of receiving data, I will provide timely feedback to SOAR on the data quality, on any topic relevant to SOAR arising during their handling and reduction, and on the entire observing process, in order to enable SOAR to better assess on the readiness of the telescope and its peripheral instrumentation.

I understand that this feedback is important to SOAR to finally offer a fully operational telescope facility to the astronomical community.

I certify that I have read the information above and agree with it.

*Technical case. Please justify  the amount of observing time requested for this proposal. Your justification should include source magnitudes (or fluxes) and estimates of the exposure times and signal-to-noise ratios required to meet the goals of your project. It is also necessary to specify the minimum sky conditions (cloud cover, image quality and phase of the moon) under which your program can be executed. Projects that do not demand large constraints maximize their chances of being observed. Note that proposals with the lack of adequate technical justification will be automatically rejected:
