Dear Reinaldo,

we found out the hard way IP connection do not work with this telecon
service we have started to use a few weeks ago. I'm really sorry about that.
We had problems with other participants as well: this telecon service is
pretty good when people call the connection centre, but showed to be
extremely poor in the case participants need to be called (this was the
first time we tried this specific mode). We'll make better arrangements for
the future.

Heartfelt apologies for the inconvenience.
Best wishes, Fabio

To: IVOA Exec <exec@ivoa.net>

Dear all,

I would like to add to the advocacy of virtual meetings. They can be very
effective (in terms of the functionality), convenient (no travel), and at an
essentially zero cost. And also very appropriate for a modern virtual
organisation like IVOA!

Now, like most of you, I found most of the traditional videoconferencing
tools to be ... awful. So I'd like to draw your attention to the emerging
technologies of immersive virtual reality and virtual worlds. Again,
probably like many of you, I was completely prejudiced and skeptical about
such things (e.g., the Second Life), due to the customary type of coverage
in the mass media - until I actually tried, and then became a convert. It
is a nascent technology: I think that it is now roughly at a stage of what
the Web was circa 1992, and that it will be as transformative as the Web (in
some kind of a technological synergy with it). In particular, I think that
even with the still relatively primitive immersive VR technology, virtual
worlds are already at a "killer app" stage for the scientific communication
and collaboration. Don't judge it until you actually try it.

The foothold is already in place: http://www.mica-vw.org/ (take a look at
the publications page in particular). This is just a modest start, but it
will grow. Some of us have been already using it for collaboration
meetings, as well as seminars, public lectures, etc.

For those of you with the minds open enough to try it, I'd be happy to help
you take the first steps, and see for yourself. You may be surprised how
well this can work. Let me know. And we may want to do an experimental
IVOA session in SL at some point.

Best regards, George

Line Data Model, v1.0"

We welcome all comments on this document evaluating its readiness for
acceptance as an IVOA Recommendation.

Please make your comments by entering them at the RFC twiki page at
http://www.ivoa.net/cgi-bin/twiki/bin/view/IVOA/SimpleSpectrumLineDMRFC

Those without IVOA Twiki accounts may send comments to dm@ivoa.net.

This model was developed in coordination with the SLAP Protocol available at
http://www.ivoa.net/cgi-bin/twiki/bin/view/IVOA/SimpleLineAccessProtolRFC,
so I encourage you to examine both documents, as SLAP is an implementation
of the Simple Spectral Line Model.

Announcement of ADASS 2009 SAPPORO

We are pleased to announce the opening of registration for the
19th annual conference on Astronomical Data Analysis Software
and Systems (ADASS). The conference will be held in Sapporo,
Japan at the Renaissance Sapporo Hotel during 4-8 October
2009.

The ADASS conference is held each year at a different hosting
astronomical institution. The conference provides a forum for
scientists and programmers concerned with algorithms, software
and software systems employed in the acquisition, reduction,
analysis, and dissemination of astronomical data. The program
includes invited talks, contributed papers, display sessions,
tutorials, and computer demonstrations, as well as special
interest ("Birds of a Feather" or BOF) meetings. These
activities aim to encourage communication between software
specialists, scientists, and also to stimulate further development
of astronomical software and systems. We encourage you to
participate in this exciting conference by submitting an oral or
poster abstract, a demonstration, or a BoF proposal.

Key topics for this year's conference include but are not
limited to:

* Time domain astronomy
* "Most dangerous" process, design & implementation errors
* The Virtual Obsevatory
* Reusable archive technologies
* Commonly available development environments & tools

As this is the first ADASS in Asia, we encourage proposals that
deal with topics of special interest to Asia.

Details on the submission process can be found on the Conference
website at http://www.adass.org/.

Important Dates:
-----------------
Deadline for Financial Aid Applications: July 1, 2009
Deadline for Oral and Poster Abstract Submission: July 15, 2009
Deadline for Demo Submission: July 15, 2009
End of Early (discounted) Registration: July 31, 2009
Deadline for BoF Submission: August 31, 2009

The Conference website will be updated regularly during the next
few months to include information about the program, the current
list of attendees, and the submitted abstracts. Please review
the calendar of important events and deadlines.

We look forward to seeing you in Sapporo!

Dear colleagues,

as we discovered during the Strasbourg Interop, the Virtual Observatory is
one of the main topics of this year's ADASS. My feeling is that IVOA
activities should be properly represented at the conference.

Shall we try to coordinate the presentations to try giving a global view of
our activities, common and national? Or leave everything to the initiative
of projects/groups/individuals? In any case, probably a presentation on the
status of the IVOA is necessary.

Please let me have your opinions on this topic. Thanks for your assistance.

Friendly regards, Fabio
